IMG_3199Coffee was grown originally in Ethiopia.

Armenians were the first to open coffee houses in Europe.

I have been making  Soorj (Coffee) in a jezve since I was a little girl.

I  remember my grandmother roasting and grinding coffee. As I was told that I should not drink it because I was too young – I did and loved it!

To this day I have a love relationship with coffee. I function better on coffee – I get more done and think better after a cup of coffee.

3:00 pm is  my coffee time!

Some of the benefits of coffee:

  • It can reduce the risk of Type 2 diabetes.
  • It can prevent Alzheimer’s disease.
  • It is rich in antioxidants.
  • It is low in fat and the fat it does contain is Omega 6.
  • It is actually good for the heart and arteries.
  • It can even lower the risk of heart failure and clogged arteries.
  • It may prevent liver disease and cancer.
  • And, coffee is calorie free if you do not add sugar and milk or cream to it.

Absolutely in moderation!

  • Too much coffee can lead to anxiety.
  • If you are trying to get pregnant it can reduce your chances.
  • If you are pregnant caffeine can pass through the placenta and is associated  low birth weight.

Some people can drink coffee and fall asleep right away while others won’t sleep the night if they have coffee beyond 4pm.
One is not better that the other – it has to do with how  quickly or slowly one’s liver takes  the caffeine  out of the blood stream.

Ideally the caffeine should rev you up for a  couple of hours and then be out of your blood stream (but that is a topic for another blog).

My favourite afternoon routine (when possible) is to have a cup of coffee and take a 10 minute nap while the coffee takes its time kicking in. I get up refreshed, clear minded and ready to get lots done.

I am very particular about the coffee I have in my home.

I buy it from George  at Kurtis Coffee (  at  the Wychwood Barns Farmers’ Market.

My roast of choice is Ethiopian Yerga Cheffe and George gets it just right.

To my taste buds if  the beans are lightly or medium roasted I get a sour undertone, whereas if it is too dark it  tastes bitter. If the coffee is prepared too  weak – well that just pisses me off!!!IMG_2963 (1)

My coffee makers of choice are: my Neapolitan flip stove top,

or my French press. Needless to say – I make strong coffee.IMG_3210

Time for some now!

  1. Love it! Now the nap while it brews is a new to me. My French press takes 5 minutes. Hardly enuf time to get my pjs on! Monika

  2. I have the same afternoon ritual! Coffee and nap. I thought it was strange, because coffee is a stimulant, but it works.
